The Old Spanish Trail Corridor Initiative Project is a comprehensive community undertaking committed to the elevation of the existence, purpose, role and expected impact of Old Spanish Trail (OST) as a major urban retail and commercial Corridor. To maximize investment and activity along the Corridor, the project combines Corridor staffing, business development, community building, marketing, and beautification projects to transform OST into a thriving neighborhood business district.

KEY OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:

  • Revitalize the commercial and economic opportunities along OST
  • Diversify the retail and commercial opportunities along the Corridor
  • Coalesce the stakeholders adjacent to the Corridor, to enhance business opportunities
  • Create, market, and promote the Corridor Plan to potential developers and national retailers
  • Encourage expansion of neighborhood businesses
  • Encourage neighborhood businesses to locate along the Corridor
  • Encourage economic investment and financial services
  • Encourage businesses to upgrade goods and services
BUSINESS CONDITIONS:
  • More than 150,000 people within three mile radius of epicenter of OST target area at Scott Street
  • OST at Scott Street is the busiest intersection in Third Ward as well as its strongest retail intersection
  • Primary service route to Texas Medical Center
  • Within Tax Abatement District
  • Many area residents have been in neighborhood for over 30 years
  • HEB, Taco Bell/Pizza Hut Express, CVS, McDonald's, Bank of America, Washington Mutual, KFC, new shopping plaza, all currently in place
  • Brand new Walgreens under construction, slated to open Winter 2007

  • Creation of a new destination place for the City of Houston
  • Realize the full commercial and retail potential of Old Spanish Trail
  • New dining, shopping and working experiences for residents of the neighborhood
